Thank you for your interest in the Yale Fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, a rigorous and highly selective program designed to train future leaders in the field.

The Yale Endocrinology Fellowship provides the ideal balance of solid clinical training at one of the country’s leading academic medical centers with opportunities for research at one of the world’s most renowned research universities. The Yale Section of Endocrinology and Metabolism is large enough to afford our trainees a breadth of experience in both clinical and scholarly spheres, yet small enough to enable meaningful mentoring relationships with each of our distinguished faculty members. Our tradition of hands-on mentoring has fostered the careers of dozens of clinical investigators and clinician-educators over the past decade. The Yale Fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism is one of the oldest training programs in endocrinology in the country, with continuous NIH funding for more than a half-century. We currently have two training tracks:

• The first, a traditional 3-year fellowship (clinical/research) in academic endocrinology, consists of one year of clinical training followed by two years of research under the direct mentorship of our faculty. Research experiences can range from the most basic, laboratory investigations involving in vitro experiments or animal models to human physiology studies, clinical trials, epidemiology, and health outcomes research. The goal is to train future physician scientists capable of pursuing academic careers and independent research funding.
• The second is our 2-year clinical fellowship, consisting of two years of clinical training. In the first year, the experience is identical to that of our 3-year traditional fellowship. During year 2, clinical experience is extended with substantial opportunity for elective rotations. A scholarly project is expected to be completed during the 2nd year as well. In both fellowships, the fellow becomes board eligible after 2 years of training.

During the first clinical year, rotations alternate monthly between our busy inpatient consult service and numerous subspecialty outpatient endocrine clinics (9 per week.)

The latter includes the Endocrine Neoplasia Program (thyroid, adrenal, pituitary), the Yale Diabetes Center, and the Yale Bone Center. Elective rotations are also available in Pediatric Endocrinology, Reproductive Endocrinology, and Endocrine Surgery, among many others. All fellows also undertake their continuity clinic for two years at the VA hospital in West Haven, CT -- just minutes away from our main medical campus. During these experiences, our fellows evaluate and manage the broad array of clinical endocrine and metabolic conditions seen in practice. During the first two years of each fellowship, fellows also attend rich, interactive clinical conferences, numbering between 7 and 8 sessions per week. These didactic sessions and workshops serve to buttress the clinical training in a relaxed atmosphere, attended by fellows from both Adult and Pediatric Endocrinology.

Our conference series culminates each week on Friday afternoon, when the entire Section convenes for the fellow’s case conference, followed immediately by our Endocrine Grand Rounds. In addition, the program encourages attendance at regional and national meetings [link to educational conferences], such as those of the Endocrine Society, the American Diabetes Association, and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, for which funding is available to defer costs. Additional funds are available to cover textbooks, journal subscriptions, and medical supplies.

We have a deep and shared commitment to nurturing the next generation of national and international endocrine leaders, both as clinician educators or clinician scientists. With regard to the latter, this includes a successful NIH T32 funding program that provides fellows with full salary support while pursuing a research career. Additionally, our program is unique in its close integration with pediatric endocrinology and endocrine surgery, both also very strong sections at Yale School of Medicine, sharing case conferences together as well as cross-over in the research arena.
